"Warrior for Justice" attorney John W. Coyle III receives prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award

Story by Darla Shelden for The City Sentinel (11-27-14 edition)

This year marks the 40th year of criminal defense lawyering for prominent Oklahoma City attorney John W. Coyle III. The Coyle Law Firm, at 125 Park Avenue, is where the motto "Warriors for Justice" has proven to be a safe haven for many who have been wrongly accused.

Recently, Coyle received the prestigious Lord Thomas Erskine Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oklahoma Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.  The presentation took place during the OCDLA’s annual meeting at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Tulsa.

Erskine was a Scottish lawyer and a fierce defender of constitutional rights. The award is given those who "have relentlessly placed the preservation of personal liberties over his or her own personal gain or reputation."

Attorney David McKenzie said," John Coyle is driven by his passion for the law, his great humanity and his desire to help. Greed plays absolutely no role in John’s practice. He has offered nothing but his quality representation for his entire remarkable career."

Billy Coyle, also an attorney who works with his father at Coyle Law said, "JW Coyle has been defending the citizen accused for 40 years.  His work ethic and steadfast dedication to his clients made honoring him with the Lord Erskine award easy.  We as a family are very proud."

Last winter, John’s career was unexpectedly and suddenly put on hold.

"In December my father had open heart surgery, Billy said.  "He returned to work three weeks later. They said he couldn’t try a case in June, so in July he tried a federal court bribery case in Muskogee and got a ‘Not Guilty."

Victor Garrett, the former owner of Arbuckle Wilderness, says that the Coyle family merged with his during his trial.

"Truly Coyle Law Firm is a team," Garrett said. "Thank you all for working with us on our case.  Most of all thank you for the way you treated us – like we were innocent until proven so."

"He was on his game and never missed a step or opportunity for the advantage," Garrett added. "Mr. Coyle was as passionate about our case as we were. My wife and my kids sat thru 3 1/2 days of trial believing that the truth would come out."

Although John has had his share of headline cases, what earns him recognition within the profession is his willingness to work for the "everyman" who is in peril.

"It is not the easy cases that he likes, it’s the hard cases that nobody wants that he will work tirelessly on," Billy said.

Oklahoma City attorney John W. Coyle III honored for 40 years of defending clients

John Coyle accepting the Lord Thomas Erskine Lifetime Achievement Award

Attorney John W. Coyle III said he likes his job because he helps people in trouble, working to get them a fair shake.

By Nolan Clay for The Oklahoman - Published Nov. 16, 2014

Prominent Oklahoma City criminal defense attorney John W. Coyle III was out getting his grandson an ice cream cone the other day when he ran into a former client.

"You know, you saved my life," said the man who was acquitted at a 2000 jury trial of sex offenses.

In 40 years of defending the accused, Coyle, 66, has heard that a lot.

"To give somebody back his life, it’s amazing. There’s nothing like it, really," Coyle said. "The ones that bother me the most are the ones I wasn’t able to save."

Coyle on Thursday was given the Lord Thomas Erskine Award, a lifetime achievement honor named after a famous British lawyer. He accepted the award from the Oklahoma Criminal Defense Lawyers Association at the association’s annual meeting in Tulsa.

Coyle was recognized by his peers for his willingness to take on unpopular cases, his devotion to fighting for every client’s constitutional rights and his commitment to working as hard and as long as it takes.

"The Erskine Award is meant for lawyers who place the preservation of personal liberties over his or her personal gain or reputation. This describes John Coyle," his friend, attorney James L. Hankins, wrote in a nomination letter.

Another friend, attorney David McKenzie, called Coyle "bigger than life."

"He has a way of connecting with a jury like no other attorney I have ever seen. ... Greed plays absolutely no role in John’s practice. Courage is his hallmark," McKenzie wrote in a nomination letter.

Coyle has worked on hundreds of criminal cases, representing all kinds of clients — from strippers to Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.

January Trial Law College Workshop

Posted on 02/18/2013

Warriors supporting Warriors: The Oklahoma Gerry Spence Trial Lawyer College (TLC) Local Working Group met in January to work through upcoming cases. After this session, John Coyle ('00) got a Not Guilty on a case he was working on and David Smith ('04) got a Deferred on one of his cases.

Workshop-Image

Pictured at the Coyle Law Firm during the workshop are (L-R) David Smith, Vicki Floyd, John Coyle (seated) and Susanne Woodrow-Snell.

Workshop participant Jim Buxton ('09) said, "We were using psychodrama to ‘discover the story.’ It is a process by which we try and learn details of an event that we might not otherwise learn from a client ‘telling’ the story. Through re-enactments and role reversals we have our clients instead 'show' us the story."

Local Groups of TLC Warriors across the country meet regularly to help TLC alumni utilize the TLC methods in every stage of a case including client interaction, case preparation and development, trial skills-and sometimes everyday life skills. Both TLC College graduates, as well as Regional Seminar attendees, are welcome.

Coyle Law Firm site for WWE national television commercial shoot

Last week the WWE, World Wrestling Entertainment came to Oklahoma City for the "Monday Night RAW" event at Chesapeake Energy Arena. It was a boisterous show that is broadcast internationally in 145 countries and 30 languages. While in town, WWE wanted to produce a television commercial and contacted the Coyle Law Firm, at 125 Park Ave, in downtown Oklahoma City, to get the job done.

Sheamus and Billy Coyle

Billy Coyle, an attorney at the firm said, "We’re listed with the Oklahoma Film Commission as a place where production companies can shoot. They said they called the Film Commission and someone there suggested they try this place.  After looking at us online, they said it looked perfect."

Coordinating Producer at WWE Joe Molinari made the call. He and two wrestlers, World Heavyweight Champion, Sheamus and Harvard Law School graduate, David Ortunga along with a small film crew showed up to make a WWE television commercial which will air nationally.

Sheamus, a 6’4", 267 lb., redhead from Dublin, Ireland, was dressed in his wrestling briefs, while Otunga, WWE Tag Team Champion, 6’, 240 lbs., from Hollywood, CA., arrived in a three piece business suit.  Otunga is married to Grammy and Oscar-winning singer and actress Jennifer Hudson.

Billy described the scene as the crew began shooting in the firm’s common area using a table and chair as props. "Otunga sits on a desk in our office and says ‘Hi I’m David Otunga, if you’ve been hit by a table, ladder or chair, call David Otunga.’  And right when he says ‘chair’ a big old Irish guy named Sheamus hits him on the back with a chair, pretty hard….BAM! It was pretty good," said Billy.

"It made a Monday fun," said John Coyle, Billy’s father and senior attorney at the firm. "It was interesting with all the cameras and lights, wrestlers and all the people involved in the production.  It was intriguing and a lot of fun. Part of our office rent was tickets to the performance Monday night."

John portrayed the event by saying, "It was a spectacle. At one end there was a huge screen that showed videos and the live action that’s happening in the ring with these two big things that explode on either end. It was loud as hell. There’s a lot of acrobatics. It was sort of a Roman spectacle without real violence – gladiator style in 2012. There’s a lot of personality and theatrics involved, a lot of rivalry and a lot of trash talk. It was loud, raucous and it was fun."

Cageside Seats Managing Editor Geno Mrosko, who was at the Peake told the City Sentinel, "The Sheamus match, against CM Punk, was good and drew a solid rating for Ion Television for the debut of WWE’s new show, "Main Event."

Oklahoma native WWE announcer Jim Ross was honored that evening, "The Jim Ross Appreciation Night was great," said Msroko.  "After they went off the air, he was presented with a glass plaque dubbing him ‘The Voice of WWE.’ McMahon and Triple H, Jerry Lawler, Bob Stoops, and others all relayed messages of support and approval and Ross was grateful – actually getting choked up in the ring. They even brought everyone from backstage out to the top of the ramp to give him a standing ovation. It was all very cool."

Leslie Channell, Deputy Director for the Oklahoma Film & Music Office said anyone interested in listing their business or private venue as a possible film location should visit the locations page of the OF&MO website at www.oklahomafilm.org or contact Locations Coordinator Yousef Kazemi at Yousef.kazemi@travelok.com.
